Japan PM meets Iran's Zarif, voices hope for continued implementation of JCPOA

Tokyo, May 16 (UNI) Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe met with Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif on Thursday at his residence in Tokyo and expressed his hope for the continued implementation of the Iran nuclear deal, reaffirming that Japan would maintain and develop friendly relations with Tehran, Japanese media reported.
Zarif began his visit to Japan on Wednesday. He met with his Japanese counterpart, Taro Kono, earlier in the day, who urged Iran to preserve the nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), amid media reports that Tehran had officially discontinued some of its commitments under the agreement.
"I am concerned about the mounting tension in the Middle East. I want to have a frank discussion to support the region’s stability. Japan and Iran have traditionally had a friendly relationship. We would like to maintain and develop that relationship," Abe said at the beginning of the meeting, as quoted by the NHK broadcaster.
