Jan Sangh was formed to end monopoly of Congress in politics: Khattar speaks on Emergency

Patna, June 24 (UNI) Union Minister and senior BJP leader Manohar Lal Khattar today said the Jan Sangh was formed to counter the monopoly of Congress in politics.
Khattar, while addressing a function organised on the theme "Emergency: a black chapter of democracy", said that the Jan Sangh was formed to provide a strong political alternative to Congress in the democratic structure of the country. People were fed up with the monopoly of Congress and they had then no other option to choose, and in that prevailing scenario Jan Sangh was formed, he pointed out.
"For the first time in the post independence era, people had understood the importance that government could be changed using the rights enshrined in the Constitution under the democratic structure of the country," Khattar said, adding that then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had given the slogan of 'Garibi Hatao', which proved to be a total flop. Poverty did not alleviate but Congress continued to get votes by befooling the people in the name of reducing poverty, he added.
