James Gunn downplays box office concerns of ‘Superman’, insists it isn’t as big a gamble as projected

Los Angeles, July 8 (UNI) Director James Gunn and producer Peter Safran are preparing to launch a bold new chapter for both DC Studios and the superhero film genre with their new film ‘Superman.’
Despite much riding for Warner Brothers and the DCU’s success on the film’s success or failure, Gunn has downplayed all concerns, insisting that the film isn’t the high-stakes gamble many are making it out to be.

As anticipation builds for the reboot film set to hit cinemas on 11 July, Gunn addressed the buzz in a new GQ profile of David Corenswet, who stars as Clark Kent in the first film of the revamped DC Universe.

Despite industry speculation and a significant production budget, the filmmaker is pushing back on suggestions that the film must be a box office juggernaut.

“This is not the riskiest endeavour in the world,” Gunn said. “Is there something riding on it? Yeah, but it’s not as big as people make it out to be.

“They hear these numbers that the movie’s only going to be successful if it makes $700 million or something and it’s just complete and utter nonsense. It doesn’t need to be as big of a situation as people are saying.”

The film, which also stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, centres on a young Superman grappling with his Kryptonian roots and small-town human upbringing, all while navigating life as a journalist in Metropolis. It’s the first major step in a broader reboot of the DC franchise, led by Gunn and Peter Safran.

‘Superman’ will also mark a strong tonal and storytelling departure from the 2013 ‘Man of Steel’ directed by Zack Snyder and starring Henry Cavill as the titular character.

Instead of the darker and grounded tone and narrative of its predecessor, the new version completely embraces its original comic style and tone, grounded in optimism and all the cheesiness of the character.

While Gunn is trying to manage expectations, ‘Superman’ is far from a modest production. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film’s net budget is estimated at $225 million after tax breaks, with promotional costs expected to approach $200 million.

Gunn has previously weighed in on the recent superhero fatigue phenomenon plaguing Hollywood, where most superhero films and serials are largely being ignored by audiences, and severely underperforming at the box office.

Talking about the subject and mentioning rushed productions like ‘The Flash’ and ‘Madame Web’, Gunn attributed the whole thing to factors like underdeveloped scripts and cameo-stuffed narratives, suggesting that these have contributed more to audience fatigue than the genre itself.
