Iran begins blocking ships in Strait of Hormuz due to Israeli strikes against Hezbollah

Tehran, Apr 8 (UNI) Iran's agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz under the ceasefire with the US lasted only a few hours, as Tehran stated Wednesday that it has begun blocking ships again in response to Israeli strikes against the Hezbollah in Lebanon.
The Iranian embassy in Mumbai posted to X: “Due to Israeli strikes in Lebanon, oil tankers will not be permitted to pass through the Strait of Hormuz."
Iran’s Fars news agency said oil tankers passing through the strait of Hormuz had been stopped as a result of Israel’s “ceasefire breach”. Iran was due to have reopened the strait during the two weeks of the ceasefire, and the oil price had dropped sharply below $100 a barrel in the hours after the truce was announced, prompting a global stock market surge.
The Iranian action comes despite an acknowledgement by US President Donald Trump that the Lebanese theatre is not subject to the ceasefire agreement with Iran.
Speaking with PBS News Hour, Trump called the conflict between Israel and the Hezbollah a "separate skirmish" that "everyone knows is not part of the ceasefire agreement.
Iran also threatened to destroy any ship that attempted to cross the Strait of Hormuz without its permission. The regime in Tehran is seeking to establish a system where it can charge any ship that seeks safe passage through the strait.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu also clarified this evening that the ceasefire does not include Hezbollah, "We are continuing to hit them, today we landed the hardest blow on Hezbollah since the Pager Operation."
Meanwhile, hundreds of oil laden tankers struck in the Gulf due to the conflict, were awaiting approval from insurers before beginning to move.
The White House called the reports from Iran’s state media about the closure of the strait of Hormuz “false” and said Trump expected it to reopen “immediately, quickly and safely” as the US signaled continued adherence to the ceasefire – even as it threatened to unravel.
