IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers steps down; Rahul Bhatia takes interim charge

Thiruvananthapuram, March 11 (UNI) In a sudden leadership change, Pieter Elbers has stepped down as Chief Executive Officer of InterGlobe Aviation, the parent company of IndiGo, with immediate effect.
The airline’s Board of Directors thanked Elbers for his contributions and service to the organisation and wished him well in his future endeavours.
Following his departure, Rahul Bhatia, Managing Director of IndiGo and one of its founders, will assume interim management of the airline’s affairs until the company announces a new chief executive, which it said is expected shortly, a release said.
Announcing the transition on Tuesday, Vikram Singh Mehta, Chairman of the Board, said Bhatia’s return to active leadership would help strengthen the company’s culture, reinforce operational excellence and deepen its commitment to delivering reliable and professional service to customers.
Bhatia said he felt a deep sense of personal commitment and responsibility towards the airline and its stakeholders. “Having founded and nurtured IndiGo for twenty-two years, I feel a strong sense of responsibility toward our nation, and toward the airline’s customers, employees, shareholders and all other stakeholders,” he said.
He added that the airline would continue to prioritise culture, service excellence and stakeholder trust while sharpening its strategic focus on serving India with a professionally managed, operationally reliable and globally respected airline.
IndiGo remains India’s largest airline and among the fastest-growing carriers in the world. With a fleet of more than 400 aircraft, the airline operates over 2,200 daily flights connecting more than 95 domestic and 40 international destinations.
The airline served around 124 million passengers in 2025 and was named the ‘Best Airline in India and South Asia’ at the 2025 Skytrax World Airline Awards. It was also ranked the sixth most punctual airline in the Asia-Pacific region in 2025 by global aviation analytics firm Cirium.
