New Delhi, Dec 10 (UNI) Railway ticket fares in India remain among the cheapest in the world, with the Centre providing nearly Rs 60,000 crore in subsidies last year to keep passenger travel affordable, union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw told the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
Responding to queries during question hour, the minister said Indian rail fares amount to barely 5-10 per cent of those in developed countries and remain significantly lower than in neighbouring nations as well.
“I would like to inform you that Railways has given about Rs 60,000 crore worth of subsidy so that the passenger transport can remain affordable. And I would like to say that even compared to our neighbouring countries, India is providing the most affordable transportation to our citizens, to our passengers.
