India marches toward self-reliance in Defence sector: Rajnath Singh

Pune, Oct 16 (UNI) India has made significant strides in reducing its dependency on defense imports and is steadily advancing towards self-reliance in the defense sector, said Defence Minister Rajnath Singh at the convocation of Symbiosis Skill and Professional University.
During the ceremony, Singh also inaugurated the School of Defence and Aerospace Technology, which was attended by key dignitaries, including Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Symbiosis Chancellor Dr. S. B. Mujumdar.
Singh highlighted that after gaining independence, India remained heavily reliant on foreign nations for defense equipment, often remaining in a "comfort zone" with imports. "However, in recent years, India has made remarkable progress in indigenizing its defense production. Today, the country manufactures a wide array of weapons and defense systems. The turnover of India's defense sector has risen from Rs 46,000 crore to Rs 1.5 lakh crore, while the country also exports defense equipment worth nearly Rs 50,000 crore," he said as he acknowledged the critical role played by the private sector in driving this progress.
