Kolkata, Jun 3 (UNI) Trinamool Congress supremo Mamata Banerjee, along with the party’s national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, will travel to New Delhi to attend the meeting of the opposition INDIA bloc scheduled for June 8.
The meeting assumes significance as it comes in the aftermath of the Trinamool Congress’ electoral setback in West Bengal and at a time when the party is facing growing internal challenges.
Mamata has repeatedly asserted since the declaration of the election results that the opposition would regroup and begin a fresh political battle with an eye on the 2029 Lok Sabha elections, with the INDIA alliance serving as the platform for that effort.
The date of the opposition meeting had remained uncertain for several days.
It was initially proposed to be held on June 2, but several leaders informed Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge that they would be unable to attend on that day.
Following consultations, June 8 was finalised for the gathering.
The meeting comes shortly after Samajwadi Party chief and former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Akhilesh Yadav visited Kolkata and met Mamata Banerjee at her Kalighat residence.
Abhishek Banerjee was also present during the meeting, which was seen as an indication of efforts to strengthen opposition unity following the elections.
Signs of closer coordination within the INDIA bloc were also visible after the alleged attack on Abhishek Banerjee at Sonarpur on May 30.
Several prominent opposition leaders, including Congress' Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, SP president Akhilesh Yadav, Aam Aadmi Party chief Arvind Kejriwal and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, expressed solidarity through social media posts.
Abhishek later thanked them by reposting their messages, reinforcing the impression that the Trinamool leadership is keen to maintain coordination with anti-BJP parties at the national level.
Political observers, however, are closely watching developments within the Trinamool Congress ahead of the June 8 meeting.
With the party facing internal dissent and concerns over possible defections, the composition and equations within its legislative wing could undergo changes before Mamata and Abhishek leave for Delhi.
Their participation in the INDIA bloc meeting is therefore expected to be scrutinised for signals about the opposition’s future strategy as well as the Trinamool Congress’ position within the alliance.
Attention will also be on whether renewed engagement between the Trinamool and the Congress leadership at the national level leads to any fresh political equations in West Bengal, where the state Congress leadership has so far shown little sympathy following the alleged attack on Abhishek and the emerging divisions within the Trinamool legislative party.
