India achieves record domestic fertiliser production, strengthening self-reliance goals: Govt

New Delhi, Jan 9 (UNI) India achieved a significant milestone in domestic fertiliser production in 2025, about 73 per cent of the country's fertiliser requirement was met through domestic manufacturing, an official statement said on Friday here.
The sustained push to boost local production is part of a comprehensive strategy by the Department of Fertilisers to ensure timely and reliable availability of nutrient inputs for farmers across the country.
Government initiatives have focused on long-term supply agreements for key raw materials, strategic diversification of sources, and targeted support for expanding manufacturing capacity.
These measures have collectively helped build resilience against global supply disruptions and price volatility.
Data from the past five years show a consistent upward trend in production of major fertiliser categories including urea, DAP, NPKs and SSP.
Production increased steadily from 433.29 lakh tonnes in 2021 to reach an all-time high of 524.62 lakh tonnes in 2025.
This growth reflects not only expanded capacity but also the revival of previously closed plants and promotion of indigenous manufacturing capabilities.
The growth in domestic production has been driven by the establishment of new fertilizer plants, revival of previously closed units, promotion of indigenous manufacturing, and assured availability of raw materials.
These measures have collectively enhanced the resilience, capacity, and sustainability of the fertilizer industry.
