In 'Mr & Mrs. '55' Guru Dutt experimented with visual storytelling: Prof. Moinak Biswas

Kolkata, Nov 9 (UNI) Guru Dutt's 1955 romantic satire "Mr. & Mrs. '55" stood as one of Indian cinema's earliest and most sophisticated experiments in visual storytelling, film scholar Professor Moinak Biswas said, reflecting on the late filmmaker, at the 31st Kolkata International Film Festival (KIFF).
"In Mr. & Mrs. '55 – it's a very interesting experiment with vision; the vision is often blocked, redirected, re-doubled for mirrors, frames within frames, a power frame within a film, within a larger film frame."
He said that Guru Dutt emerged during a moment of renewal in Indian filmmaking, when the collapse of traditional studios like New Theatres, Prabhat and Bombay Talkies gave rise to independent productions and a freer artistic atmosphere. "The 1940s and 1950s were not merely the age of parallel cinema."
Biswas also drew attention to Dutt's association with the Indian People's Theatre Association (IPTA) and the Progressive Writers' Association (PWA), cultural movements that brought together politically aware artists and writers.
"His directorial debut film 'Baazi' was written by Balraj Sahni, who was a stalwart of IPTA. In the same film, Zohra Sehgal, another stalwart of IPTA, did the choreography. He worked with Majrooh Sultanpuri, one of the lyricists, Kaifi Azmi, Sahir Ludhianvi – all three associated with the Progressive Writers Association, PWA, which started in 1936."
Discussing Dutt's aesthetic formation, Biswas recalled his early training at Uday Shankar's Almora Academy, which cultivated in him a sharp sense of rhythm, movement and framing.
Turning to the film itself, Prof. Biswas described "Mr. & Mrs. '55" as a reflection of post-colonial urban modernity, portraying individuals navigating freedom, gender roles and changing moral codes.
"In Mr. & Mrs. '55, you have this figure who obviously comes from an older, community-based life, but is now adrift in the big city – Kolkata, Bombay, cities like that – navigating the city, trying to find new footholds in this changing space of modernity, and celebrate these voices. The city is not necessarily a place of corruption and sin and seductions, and so on. The city also offers opportunities and freedoms from the old community life."
