Illegal coal mining happening “right under nose administration” in Meghalaya, says Justice Katakey

Shillong, Feb 6 (UNI) The one-man committee of Justice (retired) Brojendra Prasad Katakey today said that illegal coal mining was happening “right under the nose of the administration” in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district.
Katakey made this remark after visiting the Mynsngat Thangkso illegal coal mine site, where 25 miners were killed and nine others injured in the deadliest rat-hole coal mining in the State.
“This is out and out, illegal mining... everywhere. Illegal mining is going on in the Jaintia Hills district right under the very nose of the district administration. The illegal coal mining activity is taking place not very far from Khliehriat (the district headquarters of East Jaintia Hills). When I can go to that place, at this age, anybody can go there, except maybe the administration,” the 75-year-old Katakey told UNI.
