IAC urges TN to ease ALPG auto registrations for cleaner urban mobility

Chennai, Oct 10 (UNI) Indian Auto LPG Coalition (IAC), today said it has submitted an appeal to the Tamil Nadu government to reform to accelerate the adoption of cleaner fuels in urban mobility.
The IAC, which counts oil sector PSUs, private LPG marketers, kit suppliers and equipment manufacturers among its members, plays a crucial role in shaping fuel policy in India.
The IAC points out that Auto Liquified Petroleum Gas (ALPG) stands out as one of the cleanest automotive fuels, delivering significantly lower emissions of particulates, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons than conventional fuels.
ALPG’s advantages extend beyond just the environment – it is nearly 40 percent cheaper than petrol and provides better mileage, translating to real savings for auto drivers and commuters.
"Auto LPG has proven itself as a practical, affordable, and immediately deployable clean fuel solution — both for drivers and citizens. However, prolonged delays and regulatory bottlenecks in registering new LPG auto rickshaws threaten to undermine its potential," said Suyash Gupta, Director General.
Despite these compelling benefits, current registration practices in Chennai have resulted in substantial delays, with new ALPG vehicles facing considerable bureaucratic hurdles, the IAC said.
“Registrations are being processed slowly, with smoother processes available only for conversions of older vehicles. This has driven new ALPG vehicle sales to less restricted semi-urban areas. Such hurdles, the IAC observes, not only slow investments in sustainable transport but also run counter to broader goals of urban air quality improvement and climate action,” IAC said.
Taking a cue from progressive models, such as the Hyderabad approach, which has simplified registration for LPG vehicles, the Coalition has urged the Tamil Nadu authorities to consider a similar inclusive and facilitative policy.
In a rapidly urbanizing state where clean air remains a challenge, enabling easier and faster registration of ALPG Auto Rickshaws can help Tamil Nadu realize both its environmental and social goals.
According to IAC, as countries around the world integrate Auto LPG into mainstream urban transport due to its low emissions profile, India needs to accelerate support for alternative fuels to achieve ambitious pollution reduction and public health targets.
