Himachal makes lift registration mandatory

Shimla, Jul 10(UNI) In a major step towards enhancing public safety and streamlining compliance, the Himachal Pradesh government has made it mandatory for all lifts — whether in public or private buildings — to be registered, licensed, and regularly inspected.
Secretary of the Public Works Department, Dr. Abhishek Jain informed yesterday that citizens can now apply for lift installation approval, renewal, and payment of fees entirely online through the official website edistrict.hp.gov.in. The move aligns with Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu’s directive to give top priority to public safety.
Jain pointed out that until August 2024, nearly 2,500 lifts were operating without registration across the state. Since then, registration numbers have risen significantly — from just 1,000 last year to 1,900 by June 2025. Notices have been issued for the remaining 1,500 unregistered lifts.
