Himachal Congress faces criticism over inactive RTI Commission

Shimla, Dec 13 (UNI) The Right to Information (RTI) Act appears to be facing political neglect in Himachal Pradesh, with the ruling Congress government drawing criticism for its failure to implement the transparency law effectively. The RTI Act is one of the flagship legislations of the UPA era under Congress chairperson Sonia Gandhi.
The top posts in the Himachal Pradesh State Information Commission (SIC) have remained vacant since July, with the state government yet to appoint a Chairman and two Information Commissioners. These prolonged vacancies have rendered the statutory appellate body virtually non-functional.
Although the government has recently issued an advertisement to fill the posts, sources say the selection process is unlikely to progress soon. The three-member selection committee, comprising the Chief Minister, the Leader of the Opposition, and the Speaker of the Vidhan Sabha, has not finalized any appointments so far.
