Haryana approves use of imported bitumen for 6 months to bypass construction delays

Chandigarh, April 18 (UNI) Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini has approved the use of imported bitumen (tar) for the next six months to ensure that road construction and maintenance projects across Haryana remain unaffected by the ongoing supply shortages and price volatility caused by the conflict in the Middle East.
During a high-level review meeting held at the Haryana Civil Secretariat on Saturday, the Chief Minister directed officials to implement this measure immediately. Officials briefed the Chief Minister that the cost of bitumen had surged from ₹46,402 per metric ton on February 28 to ₹76,152 per metric ton by April 1, with the Indian Oil Corporation (IOCL) signaling a 50 percent disruption in domestic supply. Given these circumstances and clearance from the union government, the state has opted to facilitate imported bitumen to prevent project stagnation.
During the meeting, which assessed road infrastructure projects for the 2025-26 and 2026-27 fiscal years, Chief Minister Saini emphasized that maintaining high-quality road networks is essential for public convenience. He issued clear instructions for all districts to utilize patchwork machines for rapid road repairs, noting that the Public Works Department (PWD-B&R) is already successfully employing this technology.
