HAL to launch satellites as IN-SPACe transfers SSLV Tech

Bengaluru, June 20 (UNI) Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) has been awarded the complete technology transfer for the Small Satellite Launch Vehicle (SSLV) by the Indian National Space Promotion and Authorization Centre (IN-SPACe), empowering it to independently build, own, and commercialise SSLV launches — a first for any Indian company.
The decision, announced on Friday, marks a watershed moment in India's space journey, signifying the most comprehensive launch vehicle technology transfer from the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) to a commercial entity.
The move is expected to significantly enhance India’s capacity for small satellite launches and strengthen its footprint in the global space economy.
HAL emerged the winner among three technically qualified bidders following a stringent multi-stage evaluation process. The other two contenders were Alpha Design Technologies Ltd., Bengaluru (leading a consortium with Agnikul Cosmos and Walchand Industries Ltd.), and Bharat Dynamics Ltd., Hyderabad (heading a consortium with Skyroot Aerospace, Keltron and BHEL).
“The SSLV transfer enables HAL to transition from being a manufacturing partner to becoming a full-fledged launch services provider,” said Dr Pawan Goenka, Chairman, IN-SPACe. “As India targets a \\\\\\\\$44 billion space economy by 2033, this public-private partnership is key to unlocking the true potential of the Indian space industry.”
The transfer, facilitated by IN-SPACe, will be formalised through a Technology Transfer Agreement signed among HAL, ISRO, NewSpace India Limited (NSIL), and IN-SPACe. The agreement includes extensive training and handholding of HAL personnel by ISRO experts, both at ISRO and HAL facilities. Under the agreement, HAL is expected to realise and launch two SSLVs within the next two years.
Highlighting the competitive bidding process, Mr Rajeev Jyoti, Director, Technical Directorate, IN-SPACe, said: “All three bidders showed high levels of technical competency. The SSLV system, being multi-disciplinary, requires intensive handholding. The process is designed to ensure India meets its target of completing two successful SSLV launches from Indian ports within two years.”
NSIL CMD Radhakrishnan Durairaj said, “This initiative will strengthen India’s capabilities in responsive launch services for small satellites. The collaboration will position India as a significant player in catering to the growing international demand for on-demand launches.”
Expressing HAL’s commitment to the milestone, its CMD Dr D.K. Sunil said, “We are honoured to be entrusted with this responsibility. This is not just a technological opportunity, but a national mission. HAL will work closely with ISRO and IN-SPACe to establish a self-sustaining ecosystem for small satellite launches from India.”
This move is expected to bolster India’s ambition to become a global hub for affordable and reliable small satellite launches, while creating new opportunities for Indian private space players through technology absorption and operational experience. UNI BDN SSP
