Guillermo del Toro to receive Cinema Audio Society’s 2026 Filmmaker Award

Washington, Oct 8 (UNI) Academy Award-winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro will be honoured with the prestigious Filmmaker Award at the 62nd Annual Cinema Audio Society (CAS) Awards, scheduled for March 7, 2026. The announcement was made by the Cinema Audio Society.
CAS President Peter Kurland praised del Toro’s deep understanding of the power of sound in storytelling, stating, “The CAS Filmmaker Award recognizes directors who understand the critical role that sound plays in film and television, and Guillermo embodies that appreciation at the highest level. His films are defined not only by their stunning visuals and deeply human themes but also by their masterful use of sound to build atmosphere, suspense, and wonder.”
The Mexican-born filmmaker, known for seamlessly blending horror, fantasy, and rich visual storytelling, has built a remarkable career spanning over three decades.
His debut feature, Cronos (1993), premiered at the Cannes Film Festival and won the Critics Prize. He went on to direct acclaimed films such as Mimic (1997), The Devil’s Backbone (2001), and Pan’s Labyrinth (2006), the latter earning him an Oscar nomination for Best Screenplay and winning three Academy Awards for Art Direction, Cinematography, and Makeup.
Del Toro’s later works, including Hellboy (2004), Pacific Rim (2013), Crimson Peak (2015), and the Oscar-winning The Shape of Water (2017), cemented his reputation as one of modern cinema’s most visionary directors.
His stop-motion masterpiece, Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio (2022), co-directed with the late Mark Gustafson, won the Oscar, BAFTA, Golden Globe, and PGA Award for Best Animated Film. His next project, Frankenstein, starring Oscar Isaac, Jacob Elordi, and Mia Goth, is slated for release on October 17, 2025, on Netflix.
The CAS Filmmaker Award honours directors who deeply value the art of sound in film and television.
Expressing his gratitude, del Toro said, “Audiovisual storytelling requires the most careful composition and exacting standards to create a memorable experience in every theatre and every home. It is an honour to be recognised by peers I admire deeply.”
With this recognition, del Toro joins a distinguished list of previous CAS Filmmaker Honorees, including Steven Spielberg, Quentin Tarantino, Denis Villeneuve, J.J. Abrams, George Clooney, and Jon Favreau.
Established in 1964, the Cinema Audio Society celebrates excellence in sound mixing across seven categories, recognising the vital role sound plays in shaping cinematic storytelling.
