German firm MANN HUMMEL expands India footprint with Pune plant, Tumkur R&D centre

Bengaluru, May 20 (UNI) Amid mounting geopolitical disruptions and a global push to diversify supply chains, German filtration major MANN HUMMEL on Wednesday announced investments exceeding Rs 100 crore in India, positioning the country as a key pillar in its global strategy spanning engineering, innovation and manufacturing.
The company inaugurated its Global Technology & Innovation Center at Tumkur in Karnataka — its largest development centre outside Germany — while also unveiling plans for a new manufacturing facility in Pune to strengthen its automotive and industrial production base. The combined investments are expected to generate 300–400 jobs over the next year.
The Tumkur facility is designed as a next-generation innovation hub integrating research laboratories, testing infrastructure, digital engineering, data analytics and validation capabilities under one roof. It will drive advanced filtration solutions across mobility, industrial applications, electric vehicles, air purification, water treatment and sustainable industrial technologies.
Company executives said the India expansion reflects a strategic shift in global manufacturing priorities, with the country now seen not just as a production base but as a core innovation hub. “We have a very clear philosophy of ‘in the region, for the region’. Because of our strong presence in India, we can reduce cross-continental dependencies and limit exposure to geopolitical risks,” company officials said.
They added that India’s engineering talent pool, industrial ecosystem and growing demand for clean technologies have made it one of the group’s most important global markets. “If we would not invest in India right now, that would be the real question. Without investing in India, we have no future,” said Hasmeet Kaur, President – Transportation Division, MANN HUMMEL Group.
The company noted that India already hosts more than one-third of its global engineering and R&D workforce, with Bengaluru playing a central role in its innovation network. Over the years, its India operations have evolved from local adaptation of European products to full-scale global product development.
“We started by bringing products and technology from Europe to India. Today, we are entering the phase of ‘from India to the world’,” executives said, highlighting India’s growing role in global design, testing and engineering services.
The planned Pune manufacturing facility will complement existing operations in Tumkur and Bawal in Haryana, enhancing supply chain efficiency and reducing logistics constraints across western and southern markets. The company said Pune’s strong automotive ecosystem and industrial connectivity made it a strategic choice.
MANN HUMMEL currently employs around 1,250 people in India and expects the new investments to further strengthen its presence in both domestic and export markets. The company also indicated that India-made products are increasingly being evaluated for global deployment as part of its diversification strategy away from concentrated sourcing hubs.
Headquartered in Ludwigsburg, Germany, MANN HUMMEL operates in more than 80 locations worldwide and is a global leader in filtration and separation solutions across transportation, industrial, life sciences and environmental sectors.
