From bullets to ballots, Jamui’s Choramara votes after 21 years of Naxal fear

Jamui Nov 11 (UNI) Choramara, a sleeping hamlet in Jamui district, once a stronghold of Naxalite insurgents, scripted a historic shift from bullets to ballots as for the first time in 21 years the villagers came out in large numbers to exercise their right to vote in the second and final phase of the assembly elections.
Located in the Barhat block, along the Munger border, Choramara saw a new dawn as the people queued up to cast their votes. Choramara remained under the shadow of Naxal violence for over two decades during which people, scared of action of the red rebels kept themselves away from polling booths.
A senior election official in Jamui said that the bullet sounds which once echoed in the region celebrated the festival of democracy fearlessly. The transformation was not easy. In 2004, a polling booth was set up at the Choramara Middle School, but most voters stayed home, fearing Naxalite threats.
