France ends TikTok ban in New Caledonia after lifting state of emergency

Paris, May 29 (UNI) French authorities have lifted the ban on social media platform TikTok on its island territory of New Caledonia after ending the state of emergency introduced amid public unrest sparked by an electoral reform and organized by the supporters of the island's independence, the territory's high commission said on Wednesday.
"In response to the end of the state of emergency in the territory since Tuesday, May 28, 2024, the ban on the Tik-Tok platform has been lifted," the commission said in a statement.
On May 13, a peaceful demonstration against a voting rights bill spiraled into unrest in Noumea, the capital of New Caledonia, and neighboring towns. Protesters, including many minors, looted and set fire to stores, gas stations, pharmacies, and car centers. On May 16, French lawmakers voted in favor of the bill despite the ongoing unrest.
