Four out of five firms deploy AI under pressure: TrendAI Report

Bengaluru, April 8 (UNI) AI adoption in India is accelerating at a pace far ahead of security preparedness, with nearly four out of five firms admitting they have approved deployments under pressure despite known risks, according to TrendAI study.
The global research, which surveyed 3,700 business and IT decision-makers including 200 respondents from India, highlights a widening gap between rapid AI rollout and the ability of organisations to manage associated security and governance challenges.
According to the findings, around 80 per cent of Indian respondents said they felt compelled to approve AI deployments despite security concerns, reflecting mounting pressure to keep pace with business demands and technological change. However, readiness remains limited, with only 42 per cent of IT managers and 49 per cent of business managers describing themselves as moderately prepared to handle the speed of AI adoption.
The report underscores that AI deployment is outpacing control mechanisms, creating vulnerabilities across enterprise systems. A majority of IT and business decision-makers acknowledged that AI technologies are advancing faster than their organisations can effectively secure them, leaving critical gaps in oversight and risk management.
Governance remains a key concern, with organisations grappling with fragmented ownership of AI risk, lack of specialised expertise, and evolving regulatory uncertainty. Security teams are often forced into a reactive mode, responding to top-down AI adoption decisions, which in many cases leads to the rise of unsanctioned or "shadow" AI tools within enterprises.
The study also points to a growing threat landscape, where cybercriminals are increasingly leveraging AI to automate reconnaissance, enhance phishing attacks, and scale operations with greater efficiency. Despite these risks, nearly 60 per cent of malicious activity is estimated to go undetected, further compounding the challenge.
The shift towards more advanced, autonomous or agentic AI systems is adding another layer of complexity. While about half of the respondents believe such technologies could significantly strengthen cyber defence, concerns around data access, misuse, and lack of accountability remain high.
Nearly 46 per cent of IT decision-makers warned that malicious prompts could compromise AI systems, while 43 per cent of business leaders pointed to an expanding attack surface for cyber threats. Risks such as exposure of sensitive data, abuse of trusted AI agents, and lack of auditability were also flagged as major issues.
The report reveals a lack of consensus on critical safeguards, with only about half of IT managers supporting the introduction of AI "kill switch" mechanisms to shut down systems in case of failure or misuse, while others remain uncertain. Among business leaders, views were similarly divided, reflecting broader ambiguity on how to retain control over increasingly autonomous systems.
Officials said organisations are not short of awareness but lack the structural readiness to act, with pressure-driven deployment, fragmented accountability and limited expertise allowing AI to be embedded in critical systems before adequate safeguards are in place.
They emphasised that as organisations move towards autonomous AI, closing these gaps will become significantly more difficult, and called for stronger governance frameworks and proactive, unified security strategies.
The findings highlight an urgent need for enterprises to balance innovation with accountability, ensuring that AI adoption is supported by robust governance, clear ownership of risk, and real-time threat intelligence. UNI BDN KK
