Former CM Shanta Kumar raises concern over population and pollution

Dharamshala, Dec 15 (UNI) Former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister and former union Minister Shanta Kumar expressed serious concern over rising population, pollution, poverty and unemployment in the country, stating that Delhi, the capital of the world’s largest democracy, has turned into a “toxic gas chamber.”
Addressing a gathering, Kumar said that not only Delhi but several Indian cities are increasingly becoming gas chambers, with poisonous air causing serious health issues, including cancer among children. Citing reports, he said that nearly 17 lakh people died in India in 2022 due to air pollution alone.
He said that despite India being among the world’s richest nations, also houses the largest number of poor and hungry people, attributing this paradox to unchecked population growth and widening economic inequality. Kumar said that even after sustained efforts by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, poverty and unemployment continue to rise. Referring to the Global Hunger Index, he said that nearly 19 crore people in the country go to bed hungry every night.
