Lakshadweep/Kochi, May 20 (UNI) The first phase of the Census of India 2027, covering House Listing and Housing Census operations, has been successfully completed in the union Territory of Lakshadweep within the timeline notified in the official UT Gazette.
The field operations for the initial phase were conducted from April 16 to May 15, 2026. The entire exercise in Lakshadweep was carried out digitally through a mobile application, marking a fully paperless data collection process.
The exercise included the preparation of a comprehensive list of buildings and houses across the islands, along with the collection of data on 33 key indicators related to household assets and basic civic amenities. The information gathered is expected to help assess housing conditions, availability of infrastructure, housing scarcity, and broader aspects of human settlements in the region.
The census exercise is part of the nationwide Census of India 2027, being implemented by the Census of India.
The second phase, Population Enumeration, will be conducted across the country during February–March 2027. In this phase, every individual will be enumerated and detailed demographic, social, and economic information will be collected.
