Film industry stands with Rajpal Yadav, says Sonu Sood

New Delhi, Feb 16 (UNI) As the Delhi High Court is hearing Rajpal Yadav’s interim bail plea in a cheque bounce case, Actor Sonu Sood has publicly expressed his support, saying the film industry will stand by Yadav and continue to back him until justice is served.
On Monday, Sood took to X to express hope for a favourable outcome. Yadav is currently lodged in Tihar Jail after the court rejected his request for additional time to clear outstanding dues.
Sood wrote, “Today is an important day for our brother Rajpal Yadav bhai. Praying that things move in the right direction and he gets the relief he deserves. He’s a rare talent and a wonderful soul. Let’s not let the momentum die, we stand with him and will keep going till things are right.”
Earlier, Sood had also urged members of the film fraternity to extend tangible support to Yadav.
In a strongly worded message, he said, “Rajpal Yadav is a gifted actor who has given years of unforgettable work to our industry. Sometimes life turns unfair, not because of talent, but because timing can be brutal. He will be part of my film, and I believe this is the moment for all of us producers, directors, colleagues to stand together. A small signing amount, adjustable against future work, is not charity, it’s dignity. When one of our own is going through a tough phase, the industry must remind him he’s not alone. This is how we show we are more than just an industry.”
Yadav’s legal troubles arise from a cheque bounce case involving Rs 9 crore. In 2010, he had reportedly borrowed Rs 5 crore from M/s Murali Projects Pvt Ltd to finance his directorial venture, ‘Ata Pata Laapata’. Following the film’s poor box office performance and alleged repayment defaults, the matter escalated into a prolonged legal dispute.
In April 2018, a magistrate court convicted Yadav and his wife Radha, sentencing them to six months in jail. The Sessions Court upheld the conviction in early 2019, after which Yadav approached the Delhi High Court.
In June 2024, the High Court temporarily suspended his sentence and directed him to take “sincere and genuine measures” to settle the dues. However, after repeated failures to comply with repayment commitments, the court ordered him to surrender on February 2 this year.
Yadav remains in custody while the High Court considers his interim bail application. The complainant had earlier been directed to respond to the plea, leading to the present hearing. The case has drawn significant attention within the film industry, with many closely monitoring the outcome.
