Farmer suicides continue unabated in Vidarbha, 888 deaths recorded in 10 months

Nagpur, Nov 14(UNI) The ongoing crisis of farmer suicides in West Vidarbha shows no signs of easing as according to official data, 87 farmers ended their lives in October alone, while a total of 888 suicides have been reported across the region in the first ten months of this year.
Shockingly, records indicate that 22,038 farmers have died by suicide between 1 January 2001 and the present.
Farmer suicides have been documented in five districts of Maharashtra's West Vidarbha: Yavatmal, Amravati, Buldhana, Akola and Washim since 2001.

Kolhapur, Jul 18 (UNI) Congress group leader in the state legislature council Satej Patil has said that though police detained activist Sonam Wangchuk citing his deteriorating health condition, this action was a conspiracy hatched by the central government to suppress the protest.
Addressing a press conference organised before leaving for Pandharpur in Solapur district along with Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana leader Raju Shetty, Patil said the central government took this action by obtaining a court order even before the big protest at Jantar Mantar on July 20.
