Farmer dies after police lathi charge during protest over electric poles in Ghazipur

Ghazipur, Sep 11 (UNI) A tense situation unfolded in the village of Gathiya under Nandganj block after a police lathi charge on protesting villagers resulted in the death of Sitaram Upadhyay, a resident of Rukandipur.
The villagers had been staging a protest against the installation of electricity poles in a neighboring farmer’s field without mutual consent. The incident occurred late last night, leaving 8 to 10 others injured.
For the past 20–25 days, a dispute had been ongoing in Gathiya village regarding the laying of electric wires. A local farmer was installing a tube well in his field, but allegedly placed electricity poles in the adjacent land belonging to farmers Arvind Rai and Santosh Rai. The aggrieved parties had earlier lodged complaints with the Nonhara Police Station. Both parties and the local Junior Engineer (JE) were called for a discussion, after which the work was temporarily halted.
