Alan Cumming apologises as BAFTA Film Awards screws up with onstage slur

London, Mar 3 (UNI) Scottish actor and filmmaker Alan Cumming took to his Instagram handle expressing his regret after the 79th BAFTA Film Awards took an uncomfortable turn when a member of the audience shouted a racial slur attacking people of colour, which was aired during the live broadcast.
The incident occurred while "Sinners" stars Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo were presenting on stage. John Davidson, identified as a Tourette’s campaigner, was heard shouting the N-word during the broadcast. The moment quickly sparked outrage online and drew criticism from viewers across the globe.
Cumming had also addressed Davidson’s “strong language” during the ceremony. “This can be part of how Tourette’s syndrome shows up for some people,” he said onstage. “Thanks for your understanding and for helping create a respectful space for everyone.”
Cumming apologised on his official Instagram page, posting, "It's now a week since I hosted the BAFTAs. What should have been an evening celebrating creativity as well as diversity and inclusion turned into a trauma-triggering shitshow. I'm so sorry for all the pain Black people have felt at hearing that word echoed round the world. I'm so sorry the Tourettes community has been reminded of the lack of understanding and tolerance that abounds regarding their condition."
He stressed that the only possible good that could come of this is a reminder that words matter, that rushing to judgment about things of which we are not fully cognisant is folly and that all trauma must be recognised and honoured.
Both BAFTA and its broadcast partner, the BBC, later issued formal apologies, recognising the offence caused during the telecast.
