Kolkata Christmas Festival to begin from Dec 18

Kolkata, Dec 16 (UNI) With the charming Kolkata winter gradually settling in, the city is gearing up for its annual Christmas festival, which is scheduled to begin from December 18, West Bengal Tourism Minister Indranil Sen announced on Tuesday.
Launched in 2011 at the initiative of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, the Kolkata Christmas Festival has grown into a major celebration that reflects the city's spirit of inclusiveness and shared joy.
Banerjee will inaugurate the 15th edition of the festival at 4:30 pm on December 18 at Allen Park on the fashionable Park Street. While the cultural events will run till December 30, the city's festive illumination will continue until January 5, 2026.
In the days ahead, Park Street, Allen Park, St Paul's Cathedral and nearby areas will be dressed in festive lights and decorations. Bow Barracks, another well-known Christmas landmark, will also be lit up.
On the occasion of the festival, a busking programme will take place from December 21 to 23 at the Camac Street area.
After the inaugural function, the cultural programmes will be organised by the Christian Community from December 18 to 23.
On December 24 and 25, the Allen Park will be closed. Kolkata Police will organise the cultural programme on 26 December.
The Tourism Department in collaboration with the Information and Cultural Affairs Department, will host cultural festivities from December 27 to 30 involving various leading eminent artists of West Bengal.
In addition to the celebration here, prominent locations, including the churches in Darjeeling. Kalimpong. Asansol, Siliguri. Jalpaiguri, Chandannagar, Bandel, Krishnanagar, Jhargram, Purulia, Baruipur. Alipurduar, Howrah and Bidhananagar will be illuminated.
Said Sen, "For the past 14 years, it has been conducted smoothly with the support and blessings of people from all communities. We strongly believe that while religion may differ, festivals are for everyone. With a steady rise in foreign tourist arrivals, we are confident the carnival will further strengthen tourism and generate significant economic activity for local businesses." UNI NST SSP
