Defence Minister Rajnath Singh describes Bagdogra air base as strategic shield for regional security

Siliguri, Nov 7 (UNI) Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Saturday described the Bagdogra Air Force Station as a strategically important air base located in a highly sensitive region, playing a vital role in safeguarding regional security.
He said the air base served as a strong protective shield and commended the Air Warriors for maintaining a high level of operational readiness amid growing security challenges. Singh was visiting the air base to exchange Diwali greetings with Air Force personnel and interact with officers and staff. During an interactive session, he said the nature of security threats was becoming increasingly complex, extending far beyond conventional warfare. "Today, security challenges are no longer confined to conventional battles. Cyberattacks, drone attacks, proxy wars and information warfare have added new dimensions to the security landscape," he said, pointing to attempts by adversaries to undermine the morale of soldiers through social media and hostile narratives. He stressed that courage, wisdom, commitment and discipline were essential to confronting these emerging challenges. Describing the morale of Air Warriors as their greatest weapon, he said their dedication and readiness deserved appreciation. Singh also highlighted the importance of technological advancement in strengthening India's defence capabilities. Referring to the development of drones, anti-drone systems and other advanced technologies, he said the country was preparing for future security requirements through technological innovation, industrial development and the participation of startups. However, he cautioned that technology alone could not ensure success. Courage and discipline remained equally important, he said, adding that discipline was what produced exceptional warriors. Emphasising the collective nature of military operations, the Defence Minister said the success of a fighter pilot depended on the coordinated efforts of the entire team. Aviation logistics, air control, engineering and ground support personnel all played crucial roles in ensuring operational success. He assured Air Force personnel that further development in aviation and engineering capabilities would be undertaken in the coming years. He also urged them to maintain close relations with residents in the region, noting that their cooperation and understanding of the local environment could be valuable from a strategic perspective. Acknowledging the sacrifices made by personnel serving away from their families, Singh said he had come to the air base to convey his greetings and express his gratitude from the heart. He said the sacrifices of Air Warriors and their families in the service of the nation could not adequately be expressed in words. He also referred to the welfare of Agniveers and the decision to provide willing personnel with opportunities to continue in regular service, describing it as an important aspect of their future. In a message posted on social media after his visit, Singh said the Indian Air Force remained a formidable pillar of vigilance, skill and readiness in safeguarding the country's skies. He noted that domain awareness and cyber resilience had become vital in the present security environment, particularly amid asymmetric warfare, drone swarms and cyberattacks. "Every festival in our country is celebrated with joy and peace because our Armed Forces stand guard round-the-clock," he said, adding that the entire nation took immense pride in their valour and selfless service. He also expressed admiration for the energy, devotion to duty and high morale of the men and women serving on the frontline, saying that meeting them was truly inspiring. UNI MBN NST BM
