Disney’s ‘Zootopia 2’ breaks global box office records

Los Angeles, Jan 20 (UNI) Disney’s blockbuster sequel ‘Zootopia 2’ has reached another major milestone, becoming the highest-grossing animated film in Hollywood history, according to Variety.
The film has amassed USD 1.7 billion at the global box office, surpassing Disney’s Inside Out 2 (2024), which previously held the record with USD 1.69 billion. Directed by Jared Bush and Byron Howard, Zootopia 2 now ranks as the ninth highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, overtaking titles such as The Lion King and Jurassic World, Deadline reported.
China’s ‘Ne Zha 2’, however, continues to hold the overall record for the highest-grossing animated film globally, with box office earnings of USD 2.25 billion.
Reacting to the achievement, Disney Entertainment co-chairman Alan Bergman credited audiences worldwide for the film’s success.
“This milestone belongs first and foremost to the fans around the world whose enthusiasm made it possible,” Bergman said in a statement quoted by Variety.
“We’re incredibly proud of our filmmakers Jared Bush, Byron Howard and Yvett Merino, along with the entire team at Walt Disney Animation Studios, for creating a film that connects so deeply with audiences everywhere.”
Released over the Thanksgiving holiday, ‘Zootopia 2’ delivered a massive opening, earning USD 156 million in North America and USD 559.5 million globally within its first five days.
The performance marked the biggest global animated opening of all time and the largest worldwide debut of the year.
The sequel reunites audiences with rabbit police officer Judy Hopps (voiced by Ginnifer Goodwin) and con-artist-turned-partner Nick Wilde (Jason Bateman), who team up once again to investigate a mystery involving a new reptilian resident, voiced by Ke Huy Quan. Disney has not yet announced plans for a third ‘Zootopia’ installment.
