Delhi mulls Deposit Return Scheme to curb plastic waste; feasibility study ordered

New Delhi, Apr 14 (UNI): Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa on Tuesday directed officials to conduct a feasibility study on introducing a Deposit Return Scheme (DRS) to tackle the growing burden of non-biodegradable waste in the city.
The move comes amid concerns over plastic and similar waste clogging drains, polluting water bodies, degrading soil, and contributing to air pollution through open burning. Chairing a high-level review meeting, Sirsa flagged the environmental and public health risks posed by unmanaged waste.
Under the proposed DRS, consumers would pay a small refundable deposit on certain non-biodegradable items, such as plastic and glass bottles, aluminum cans, liquid packaging, and multilayered plastics, at the time of purchase. The deposit would be returned when the empty items are brought back to designated collection points, including shops and recycling centres.
