De Bruyne leads team to drub Romania as Belgium bounce back

Cologne (Germany), June 23 (UNI) Belgium made a statement in their EURO 2024 campaign with a decisive 2-0 victory over Romania, bouncing back from their opening loss to Slovakia. Captain Kevin De Bruyne was instrumental throughout the match, showcasing his exceptional skill and leadership on Sunday IST.
The match began with a bang as Belgium took the lead within the first two minutes. A swift play saw the ball break to Romelu Lukaku, who passed it back to Jeremy Doku. Doku then set up Youri Tielemans, who scored with a powerful low shot past Romanian goalkeeper Florin Nita. This goal, clocked at 73 seconds, became the third fastest in Euro history.
Romania immediately sought to respond. Radu Dragusin's header forced a fine save from Belgian goalkeeper Koen Casteels. The Belgian attack, led by the dynamic duo of Doku and Lukaku, continued to threaten, with Lukaku’s shot being deflected wide. De Bruyne’s relentless driving run allowed Dodi Lukebakio to test Nita, who made a full-stretch save, followed by another save from a Doku attempt.
Despite Belgium's pressure, Romania remained determined. They ended the first half strongly and started the second half on the front foot. Valentin Mihaila had a golden opportunity but fired over the bar. De Bruyne, increasingly influential, combined frequently with Lukaku to create more chances. Casteels once again proved crucial for Belgium, denying Dennis Man who broke through the defense.
Belgium secured their win when Casteels launched a long ball, which De Bruyne expertly anticipated, flicking it on to score the second goal. Romania continued to press, but Belgium's defense held firm to secure their first win of the tournament.
De Bruyne was fabulous, driving Belgium's attacks and making crucial contributions throughout the game. "He made the difference. Once again the key player," noted the UEFA Technical Observer panel. UNI BDN AKS
