Consumers denied benefits of falling crude oil prices, alleges BJD seeking fuel tax cut

Bhubaneswar, Jun 8(UNI) The opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Monday accused the BJP-led governments at the Centre and in Odisha of failing to pass on the benefits of declining international crude oil prices to consumers, resulting in a sustained rise in the prices of petrol, diesel, LPG, and other essential commodities.
Addressing a press conference here, BJD president Snehaangini Chhuria said soaring fuel and cooking gas prices had placed an unbearable burden on households, small businesses, and low-income families, even as global crude oil prices have softened in recent months.
Claiming that the cost of domestic LPG has nearly doubled over the past decade, Chhuria said a household cylinder that cost around Rs 415 in 2014 is now priced at about Rs 968. She alleged that the continuous increase in the prices of petrol, diesel, and commercial LPG cylinders had triggered a cascading effect on the cost of living, adversely impacting middle-class families, small traders, tea stall owners, and the hospitality sector.
