Consultation held in Lawngtlai on illegal immigration, unregulated trade

Aizawl, Jan 19 (UNI) Amid growing concerns over illegal immigration and unregulated trading activities, a district-level consultation meeting was convened on Monday at the Deputy Commissioner’s Conference Hall in Lawngtlai town of south Mizoram, which shares international borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh.
The meeting was chaired by Lawngtlai Deputy Commissioner Donny Lalruatsanga, who, while welcoming the participants, said the steady influx of undocumented immigrants from neighbouring countries and the absence of effective regulation in trading practices had emerged as serious challenges for the district. He informed the gathering that the state Home Department has also issued directives to take appropriate measures to address the situation.
The Deputy Commissioner stressed that the issue could not be dealt with through administrative intervention alone and called for coordinated action involving civil society organisations, Village Councils, law enforcement agencies and security forces. He pointed out that the implications of unchecked illegal immigration and irregular trade could have long-term consequences not only for Lawngtlai district but for the state as a whole. While recognising humanitarian considerations, he cautioned that delayed or inadequate action could result in more complex problems in the future.

Man sentenced to life imprisonment for raping stepdaughter

Agartala, Feb 14 (UNI) A 52-year-old man has been sentenced to life imprisonment by a special POCSO court in West Tripura for raping his 11-year-old stepdaughter in April 2024 in the Mandai area on the eastern outskirts of Agartala.
Special Public Prosecutor Jayanta Chowdhury said that the court ruled that the convict will remain behind bars for the remainder of his natural life. In addition to life imprisonment, the convict was fined Rs 5,000.
