Congress accuses Centre of “strangling” MGNREGA by diluting its spirit & delaying funds

Dharamshala, Jan 10 (UNI) Senior Congress leader and Deputy Chief Whip of the Himachal Pradesh Assembly, Keval Singh Pathania, today accused the Centre of “strangling” the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) by diluting its spirit and delaying funds.
He said the Congress will take its ‘MGNREGA Bachao Sangram’ from villages to the national level to protect the scheme.
Addressing a press conference here, the Shahpur MLA said the Centre has weakened MGNREGA by changing its name and provisions, and demanded that the BJP-led union government issue a white paper on the funds released under MGNREGA so far. He asserted that MGNREGA was implemented not as a welfare scheme but as a legal right of poor labourers, and any attempt to weaken it amounts to an attack on their livelihood.
