Condemning crime through song is not a criminal act: Cong leader Cheriyan Philip

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 17 (UNI) Senior Congress leader Cheriyan Philip on Wednesday asserted that condemning crimes and criminals through songs does not constitute an offence under the Indian law, irrespective of the tune, rhythm, or musical form used.
Reacting to the media reports about the registration of a case over the song “Pottiye, Ketiyé”, Philip alleged that the move was politically motivated and aimed at silencing public dissent. He said the song represents a legitimate public appeal demanding punishment for those allegedly involved in the looting of gold from Sabarimala, which he described as a collective asset of Lord Ayyappa and the community of devotees.
According to Philip, the song gained wide circulation on social media because it echoed popular anger and anguish. Philip said the intolerance shown by CPI(M) leaders towards the protest song reflects their discomfort with the intensifying public response to the issue.
