Colleges must strengthen data governance to curb emerging white-collar cyber risks

Thiruvananthapuram, April 22 (UNI) Educational institutions are increasingly being viewed as sensitive digital environments where student data, technical skills, and future access to critical sectors converge, raising concerns among experts about emerging white-collar cyber risks, cyber-physical security expert K S Manoj said today.
Student databases today store extensive personal and behavioral information, making them high-value targets within the domains of Cybersecurity and Data privacy. Experts note that risks often do not arise from direct attacks but through subtle pathways such as social engineering, peer influence, or misuse of trust within campus settings.
“These environments can unintentionally enable a ‘seeding effect’, where early exposure to data misuse or manipulation may evolve into insider threats when individuals later enter sectors like energy, telecom, or finance,” the cybersecurity professional said.
