Cinema, culture and control: Opposition leader slams Centre over film ban at IFFK

Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 16 (UNI) Opposition leader in Kerala Assembly V D Satheesan on Tuesday strongly criticised the union government’s decision to deny screening permission to selected films at the Kerala International Film Festival (IFFK), calling it an assault on India’s long tradition of cultural openness and cinematic exchange.
Recalling an earlier era, the Opposition leader noted that during Rajiv Gandhi’s tenure as Prime Minister, it was customary for Doordarshan to telecast films from countries whose heads of state visited India.
Russian, French and other international art, classic and parallel films once reached Indian homes through the national broadcaster. These broadcasts, along with the regular screening of critically acclaimed national and international cinema, shaped the visual literacy and political consciousness of an entire generation.
