Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’ to be first ever film shot entirely on IMAX

Los Angeles, May 16 (UNI) Director Christopher Nolan continues to break new grounds in filmmaking, as his upcoming movie ‘The Odyssey’ is the first cinema in history to be shot entirely on IMAX cameras.
An IMAX spokesperson confirmed with People on Thursday that Nolan's next movie, which stars Matt Damon as the ancient Greek mythological hero Odysseus, will be filmed entirely with IMAX cameras — the first feature-length movie ever to do so.
While Nolan has used IMAX before in films like ‘Dunkirk’, ‘Tenet’, particularly in his 2023 Academy Award winning biopic ‘Oppenheimer’, the loud and clunkily big nature of IMAX cameras has made it nearly impossible to make entire feature length films with them.
‘Oppenheimer’, which grossed nearly a billion dollars at the box office, earned over $190 million (20% of its profits) entirely from IMAX screening. This prompted Nolan to challenge the company to improve its cameras, to make them lighter and quieter, and to solve issues with scanning and processing the cameras’ 70 mm film stock, to allow him to easily watch dailies as he shot, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
“Chris called me up and said, ‘If you can figure out how to solve the problems, I will make [Odyssey] 100 percent in Imax.’ And that’s what we’re doing,” said Imax CEO Rich Gelfond, speaking at the company’s annual press lunch in Cannes on Thursday. “He forced us to rethink that side of our business, our film recorders, our film cameras.”
Nolan and Universal Pictures first announced that the acclaimed director, 54, would adapt Homer's ‘The Odyssey’ into a film using new IMAX technology back in December.
Featuring an ensemble cast, the film will star Matt Damon, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Charlize Theron, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, John Leguizamo and Benny Safdie.
‘The Odyssey’ is expected to hit the theatres on July 17, 2026. UNI ANV SSP
