Charlize Theron takes dig at strong gender gap in action films in Hollywood

Los Angeles, July 8 (UNI) Taking a dig about the persistent gender gap in Hollywood’s action genre, actress Charlize Theron called out studios for their double standards and asked them to take more chances on female-led blockbusters, as per The Hollywood Reporter today.
In a recent interview with The New York Times, the Oscar-winning actress said she’s experienced first-hand the double standards women face in action cinema, noting that the genre remains heavily skewed in favour of male leads.
“It’s harder,” Theron said. “That’s known. Action films with female leads don’t get greenlit as much as the ones with male leads. I think the thing that always frustrates me is the fact that guys will get a free ride.”
Theron, known for her roles in high-octane titles such as ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’, ‘Hancock’, ‘The Old Guard’, ‘Atomic Blonde’ and ‘Æon Flux’, added that women in the genre often don’t get second chances if a film underperforms.
“When women do this and the movie maybe doesn’t hit fully, they don’t necessarily get a chance again,” she said.
“It’s not a risk that studios want to take, but they’ll take it many times on the same guy who might have a string of action movies that did not do so well.”
Theron, who recently reprised her role as Andy in ‘The Old Guard 2’, also reflected on her enduring love for action despite the physical toll it has taken over the years.
“I love dance, but I would never have been able to go back and be a dancer again, right?” she explained. “Action movies gave me this opportunity to be physical again, to be a storyteller with my body.”
The actress’ comments added to the ongoing conversation in the industry regarding female representation and risk in big-budget filmmaking, particularly as audiences push for broader diversity in storytelling across all genres.
Theron is not the first actress to have called out Hollywood on this, as other prominent actresses such as Jeniffer Lawrence, Natalie Portman, Emma Stone, Jessica Chastain, and Meryl Steep among several others have also criticised the industry over this topic.
