CBI begins Kolkata hospital rape-murder probe after court order

Kolkata, Aug 13 (UNI) The CBI swung into action hours after the Calcutta High Court on Tuesday directed the central agency to probe the alleged rape and murder of a junior female medical trainee in a government-owned hospital here.
However, the protesting medics intensified their agitation and called for an eight-hour cease work at all government and private hospitals across West Bengal on Wednesday.
The protesters said they would not call off the agitation until the real culprits were arrested and handed exemplary punishment for the brutal rape-murder of the 31-year-old lady post-graduate trainee, which has shocked the collective consciousness of the nation and caused public outrage across India. Sources said the victim was resting after 36 hours of duty at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital early Friday.
Meanwhile, tension ran high in front of the hospital following a report that a room near the scene of the murder was being demolished to make a restroom.
A protestor alleged they came to know that a room close to the scene of the murder on the 3rd-floor chest department seminar hall was being demolished. The doctors immediately dispatched some volunteers to stop it. He alleged there was an attempt to tamper with evidence of the crime.
A CBI team this afternoon visited the city's Tala Police station to acquire the case diary or FIR from the Kolkata Police, who had registered an unnatural death case.
Earlier a division bench headed by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya after hearing a batch of PILs, including that of the bereaved parents of the victim, transferred the probe from SIT of Kolkata Police to the Central Bureau of Investigation. The judges directed the Kolkata Police to hand over all the documents related to the case.
The parents of the victim told the court that they were concerned that if the SIT probe is allowed to continue in this manner, it will not serve the purpose of the investigation to unearth the truth. The SIT only arrested one suspect - Sanjay Roy - a Civic Volunteer and there was little progress so far. court sources said.
The court-monitored CBI probe was the demand of the victim's parents.
The CBI has been ordered to file a report to the court in three weeks' time. UNI PC SJC SSP
