Ottawa, Aug 6 (UNI) Canada has called for a swift and peaceful return to a "democratic and inclusive civilian-led government" in Bangladesh, media officials said on Tuesday.
According to Daily Star, in a statement issued by Canada’s Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly, the country emphasized its commitment to democracy, inclusive governance, and the rule of law.
“We urge the people of Bangladesh to unite around the principles of freedom and democracy upon which their country was founded,” Joly said.
The statement strongly condemned “human rights violations, deaths, torture, arbitrary arrests, and lethal force used against the people of Bangladesh in recent weeks.” It also expressed deep condolences to those affected.
“During this transition, we urge all parties to respect and uphold democratic institutions and processes and the rule of law,” the statement added.
It stressed the importance of ensuring that all individuals arrested in recent weeks receive due process and that a full, impartial investigation is conducted to hold perpetrators accountable, the reports said.
The minister also highlighted the critical need for “the maintenance of a full Internet access” to allow people to access information and connect with their loved ones globally.
“Respect for fundamental human rights, including freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly, is critical for democratic governance and to build peaceful and prosperous societies,” Joly said, adding, “Canada stands with the people of Bangladesh during these challenging times.”
