Cairn Oil & Gas partners with EMGS for 3D Electro-Magnetic survey in KG Basin

New Delhi, Apr 25 (UNI) Cairn Oil & Gas, a subsidiary of Vedanta Limited and India's largest private oil and gas exploration company, has announced a strategic partnership with Norwegian company Electromagnetic Geoservices (EMGS) to acquire a cutting-edge 3D Controlled Source Electro-magnetic (CSEM) survey for its ongoing exploration campaign in the deepwater Krishna-Godavari (KG) block on India’s East Coast.
CSEM, a geophysical method known for mapping subsurface resistivity, is poised to enhance the accuracy of hydrocarbon detection in the region. EMGS, the global leader in marine electromagnetic services, has previously provided data for major global oil supermajors. Cairn is one of the first companies in India to utilise 3D CSEM survey technology, positioning itself at the forefront of exploration innovation in the country.
The survey is being conducted by the EMGS vessel, Atlantic Guardian, which is currently operating in the KGDWHP-2017/1 block using the advanced Deep Blue source system. The vessel is expected to continue acquiring data in the block over the next few weeks. Once data acquisition is complete, the survey will be processed to provide highly accurate results for the deepwater block, enabling enhanced exploration strategies.
The data gathered will be integrated with re-processed 3D seismic data, facilitating the creation of more accurate subsurface models. This integration is expected to significantly reduce exploration risks and help in identifying and prioritising key prospects within the block’s extensive offshore exploration portfolio.
Hitesh Vaid, Chief Financial Officer of Cairn Oil & Gas, commented, "Cairn has consistently been at the forefront of adopting cutting-edge technologies to drive efficient exploration and production in India’s upstream sector. This partnership with EMGS will accelerate the development of our deepwater block in line with our vision to contribute 50% of India’s oil and gas production."
Sam Algar, Chief Exploration Officer at Cairn Oil & Gas, added, "The data from this survey will aid in pinpointing locations for exploration, appraisal, and subsequent development, ensuring that drilling decisions are based on the most accurate subsurface data. With EMGS’s global expertise and the latest in CSEM technology, we are confident the KGDWHP-2017/1 block will realise its full hydrocarbon potential.”
Earlier in March 2025, Cairn entered into a strategic alliance with a global technology leader to accelerate the development of integrated subsea infrastructure for deepwater projects in India.
Cairn Oil & Gas currently holds over 4,500 sqkm of offshore deep-water block in the KG Basin, with water depths ranging from 500 to 2,500 meters. The company plans to begin drilling operations in 2026 within a 3,600 sq km area that includes four significant gas discoveries and a wide range of prospects with multi-trillion cubic feet (TCF) potential.
