Cabinet nod to Export Promotion Mission to boost India’s Textile and Apparel Sector: CITI

New Delhi, Nov 13 (UNI) The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry (CITI) has welcomed the union Cabinet’s approval of the Export Promotion Mission, announced in the union Budget for FY 2025–26, stating that the move will provide a major thrust to India’s textile and apparel sector.
Thanking the Prime Minister and the union Cabinet for the much-needed measure, CITI Chairman Ashwin Chandran said the government’s decision will help “boost India’s textile and apparel sector to become globally competitive, better placed to leverage opportunities arising from FTAs, diversify into newer markets, and create more and better-quality jobs for our young people.”
He also highlighted that this strategic move by the government, coming against the backdrop of optimism surrounding the imminent India–US trade deal, will further add to the feel-good factor among India’s textile and apparel exporters.
The initiative is expected to tackle structural challenges faced by MSMEs, which form the backbone of India’s textile and apparel industry. Many such units face hurdles in accessing timely and affordable finance, CITI noted.
India has set an ambitious goal of doubling textile and apparel exports to USD 100 billion by 2030. The country exported nearly USD 38 billion worth of textile and apparel products in FY 2024–25.
However, the industry has faced recent headwinds following the 50 percent tariff imposed by the US on Indian goods effective August 27, which severely impacted exports in September. The US remains India’s largest market for textiles and apparel, accounting for 28 percent of total exports, valued at nearly USD 11 billion in 2024–25.
According to CITI’s analysis, Indian textile exports fell 10.45 percent year-on-year in September 2025, while apparel exports declined 10.14 percent during the same period. Cumulatively, textile and apparel exports dropped 10.34 percent compared to September 2024.
Despite the challenges, industry leaders are hopeful that the Export Promotion Mission will help stabilize exports, strengthen MSMEs, and position India as a key global player in the textile value chain.
