Stock Markets extend losing streak for fourth session, Nifty recovers to 22,600

New Delhi, Oct 23 (UNI) Indian Stock Markets on Friday extended losing streak for the fourth consecutive session. During the session, Nifty recovered to around 22,600 after slipping below 22,400 amid broad-based selling across sectors.

At close, the Sensex was down 125.56 points or 0.17 percent at 73,123.83, recovering 670 points from the day's low, while the Nifty50 index also recovered 228 points from day's low to close at 22,600, down 87.65 points or 0.39 percent. For the week, the BSE Sensex and Nifty 50 snapped their two-week winning streak, declining 2 percent and 2.35 percent, respectively.

Among the sectors, all the indices ended in the red. The key ones were Consumer Durable down 3 percent, while Realty, Energy, Metal, PSU Bank down more than 2 percent each. On Nifty, the biggest losers were Shriram Finance, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles (TMPV), Adani Enterprises, Tata Steel, Jio Financial, while among the losers were Eternal, Apollo Hospitals, Infosys, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Maruti Suzuki. Indian rupee ended lower for the second consecutive session falling 12 paise to 94.94 per US dollar from the previous close of 94.82. Over 700 stocks touched 52-week low, including Swiggy, Jaiprakash Power Ventures, Inox Wind, NAVA, CreditAccess Grameen, HEG, Afcons Infrastructure, NTPC Green Energy, CEAT, Jupiter Wagons, Reliance Power, Colgate-Palmolive India, Vedanta Aluminium, Torrent Power, CIE Automotive India, Aditya Birla Fashion and Retail, JM Financial, KEC International, Rashtriya Chemicals and Fertilizers, and Swan Corp, among others.

Vinod Nair, Head of Research, Geojit Investments Limited said, "Indian equities endured a challenging, holiday-shortened week, with benchmark indices extending their losses as inflation concerns intensified following a fresh surge in crude oil prices. Against this backdrop, rising domestic yields placed equity valuation premiums under renewed scrutiny, weighing steadily on the market and overshadowing support from resilient Q2 earnings." "The broader market took the brunt of the de-risking, as valuation concerns and the unwinding of leveraged positions triggered a disproportionately sharp correction in mid- and small-caps, while large-caps held up comparatively better, " he said.

"Across sectors, IT was the lone pocket of resilience, recovering from early selling to end the week largely unchanged on improving earnings visibility and renewed investor appetite. However, rate-sensitive sectors such as consumer durables, metals and realty saw the heaviest selling as input-cost and margin worries resurfaced."
