New Delhi, April 20 (UNI) Indian stock markets on Monday extended gains but ended flat amid volatility. Market had a mild positive start, and remained volatile in early trade and saw buying interest in the late morning session.
Amid the ongoing fluctuations in the Iran and US talks, investors are adopting a wait and watch approach before taking any firm stance on equity and other financial assets.
At close, the Sensex was up 26.76 points or 0.03 percent at 78,520.30, and the Nifty was up 11.30 points or 0.05 percent at 24,364.85.
Brent crude oil price rallied 6.10% to $95.89 a barrel, while the US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures surged 7.49% to $90.13 a barrel.
Among sectors, the key gainers were Capital Goods, Media, Power, Energy, PSU Bank in the range of 0.5 to 1% while on the losing end were IT, Telecom, Realty shedding 0.5% each.
On Nifty, the key gainers were Trent, SBI, JSW Steel, Asian Paints, Grasim Industries while losers were Jio Financial, Hindalco, HDFC Life, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Kotak Mahindra Bank.
Nearly 200 stocks touched their 52-week high on the BSE, including Graphite India, Apar Industries, Schneider Infra, HEG, BHEL, Torrent Power, CG Power, ABB India, Hitachi Energy, Granules India, NLC India, Adani Power, Thermax, J&K Bank, Power Finance, Kirloskar Oil, Jindal Steel, Lloyds Metals, Tata Power, Siemens, among others.
India VIX jumped over 9% to reach near 19, reflecting increased market nervousness due to global uncertainties.
In terms of key performers, Ather Energy witnessed renewed buying interest, with the stock rebounding 4.5%. Trent shares settled up 3% from the previous close.
HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank closed flat after announcing their Q4 results over the weekend.
Shares of PSU firm Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) rose up to 5.5% after posting strong revenue growth in FY26.
In the global space, US stock futures declined even after Wall Street had recently touched record highs. Germany's DAX, France's CAC, and the UK's FTSE declined by 1% during the session.

Foreign investors continue exit, withdraw over Rs 27,000 cr in May

New Delhi, May 17 (UNI) Foreign investors continued to take exit from the Indian equities as they withdrew Rs 27,048 crore so far this month. As per the data from NSDL, the total outflows by Foreign Portfolio Investors (FPIs) from the equity market have reached Rs 2.2 trillion in 2026. This is higher than the Rs 1.66 trillion pulled out during the entire 2025.
