Boost for Great Indian Bustard conservation as three more chicks hatch in Rajasthan

New Delhi, Jun 14 (UNI) Three Great Indian Bustard chicks have hatched in Rajasthan under a conservation breeding programme, providing a boost to efforts to revive the population of the critically endangered bird species, Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav said on Sunday.
According to the officials from the Ministry, the chicks were born through a "jump-start" intervention, a conservation technique that involves collecting eggs from the wild and rearing chicks in a protected environment to improve survival rates, founder genetic diversity and reduce the risk of predation.
With the latest hatchlings, the number of chicks born under the conservation breeding programme has reached 26 in its fourth year, according to the minister. The programme is being implemented under Project Great Indian Bustard, which was launched by the Rajasthan Forest Department in 2013 to conserve the rapidly declining population of one of India's heaviest flying birds.
