BNP warns against any 'imposed proposals' on July Charter

Dhaka, Nov 14 (UNI) The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has said that any reform proposal exceeding the scope of the July National Charter must be decided directly by voters through a referendum held alongside the national election.
BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed warned that the party would reject any "imposed or coercive" initiative that undermines the authority of Parliament or bypasses constitutional procedure.
The Charter document, drafted after the July Uprising which overthrew the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina last year, proposes a total overhaul of the constitutional and institutional systems in the country, making major reforms to the current judicial, electoral, and administrative mechanisms, as well as introducing a new political framework distinct from the original tenets of secularism, democracy, nationalism, and socialism proposed by the country's founder and its first PM 'Bangabandhu' Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
