Blue Star Limited to export heat pumps to US, invest Rs 210 crore

Chennai, Mar 10 (UNI) Air conditioning and commercial refrigeration major Blue Star Ltd plans to ship out heat pumps to the US market, where two companies have approved the product, said a top company official.
He also said the company will be investing about Rs 210 crore in manufacturing, research and development, and advertising, and will also start construction of a new facility in Sri City near here in 2029 to make room air conditioners and exports of commercial air conditioning products.
“Our heat pumps have been approved by two US companies. The product will be made at our Wada plant in Maharashtra. Tariff (US import tariff) will play an important role,” B.Thiagarajan, Managing Director said.
The heat pumps are used to warm up homes in the US during winter. Blue Star has been approved by two US companies as a contract manufacturer. The pumps will be sold under the US company's brand.
Blue Star is also looking at the European markets for the heat pumps, Thiagarajan said.
According to him, by 2030, the company targets about Rs 3,000 crore revenue from exports out of the total revenue of about Rs.20,000 crore.
Thiagarajan said currently, the export revenue is about 10 percent.
On the capex side, Thiagarajan said the company will be investing about Rs 210 crore in manufacturing (automation, maintenance), research and development, and media advertising.
With the rising prices of copper and other inputs, Blue Star, like other air conditioner makers in India, has decided to hike its prices.
Thiagarajan said the tightening of the energy efficiency star labeling has also resulted in an increase in costs for the company.
Blue Star is considering increasing the prices of its air conditioners in phases.
Thiagarajan said the company hopes to do well in the upcoming summer season, though the geopolitical situation in the world may also have an impact on sales.
Meanwhile, the company on Tuesday announced the launch of a new range of room air conditioners, including a premium product called Iconia.
