BJP sweeps Mizoram's Chakma village council polls

BJP sweeps Mizoram's Chakma village council polls

Aizawl, March 13 (UNI) The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) secured a landslide victory in the village council (VC) elections within the Chakma Autonomous District Council (CADC) held on Wednesday, winning 64 out of the 88 councils, the Mizoram State Election Commission (SEC) announced on Thursday.
In a show of dominance, the BJP clinched 366 of the total 516 VC seats, comprising 304 general and 62 reserved seats. The Zoram People's Movement (ZPM) emerged as the second-largest force, winning 12 VCs with 81 seats, including 67 general and 14 reserved. The Mizo National Front (MNF) followed, securing 8 VCs by claiming 45 seats (38 general and 7 reserved).
The Congress, once a dominant player in CADC politics, suffered a major setback, failing to win any village council but managing to secure just two seats—one general and one reserved. Meanwhile, independent candidates gained control of two VCs, winning 22 seats (18 general and 4 reserved).
Two VCs returned a fractured mandate with no single party securing a majority. The BJP had an uncontested victory in seven VCs, while ZPM won one VC unopposed.
Voter turnout for the election stood at an impressive 86.97 per cent. The polling process was largely peaceful, except at Saizawh West, where voting was extended until 6 pm due to the misprinting of an independent candidate’s symbol on ballot papers, necessitating a reprint.
